The challenge for the city is to connect companies hiring in these industries with qualified job seekers. Davidson County residents are eager for jobs to go to local candidates. In order to hire local people for construction, employers need to be able to readily find and hire qualified candidates. The Nashville Construction Readiness Partnership was started to address this challenge. In its first year, it provided residents with necessary training as well as connected qualified candidates with potential employers (and vice versa). For Davidson County’s low- and middle-income residents, we help provide jobs and career paths that would be otherwise inaccessible. After its first two years, we had successfully helped more than 200 Davidson County residents enrolled in construction training programs. Of that group 90% successfully landed jobs. For the second year of this Public Investment Plan, we changed what the "C" in its name stands for, expanding from "construction" to "careers" and broadening the program’s reach to additional industries such as Hospitality and Healthcare. Why It Matters Booming Economy Look around the Nashville skyline, and you’ll see cranes. The Metro area has a vibrant economy, but residents living in the Promise Zones, areas of Nashville where poverty and unemployment is still high, are not always aware of the employment opportunities that are available to them. A Training Gap Nashville Career Readiness Partnership connects potential employers and candidates. Through training programs, low income and unemployed residents can learn the skills necessary to work in construction, hospitality and healthcare. Our goals include adding more community partners to enhance program awareness, and assist with recruiting efforts, while continuing to develop relationships with area employers to identify their specific hiring needs including the basic training required. We bridge the gap between skilled workers and companies with open positions by: Partnering with Local Organizations We connected with the Nashville Workforce Network , Nashville Organized for Action and Hope , and other Community Based Organizations to make them aware of potential skills training and career opportunities for residents. These organizations recruit Nashville residents to participate in skills training and get a connection with local employers who are hiring. Employers Employers are invited to engage with Training Providers and attend graduations where they have access to interested candidates. Nashville Career Advancement Center is a Metro Agency operating in partnership with employers, community agencies, training providers, and Nashville’s job seekers to connect through the Nashville Career Readiness Partnership. We are a central point of contact for employers looking to fill open positions. Community engagement and support is critical to ensure that citizens, neighborhoods, and districts in Davidson County have access and the opportunity to connect with the Partnership. Our partnership benefits from the relationships leveraged through our Nashville Workforce Network . This network has over 300 members including nonprofits, government entities, education providers and employers connected as members. Companies interested in leveraging this network to recruit construction, hospitality and healthcare candidates should call us at 615-862-8890. Our Success Stories Gavin Gavin Wilson has a wonderful story of determination and career success. After struggling to find the perfect career situation, Gavin decided to take a leap of faith by applying for the Nashville Career Readiness Partnership Hospitality Training program offered at the Goodwill Career Solutions Center. Besides learning about hotel and restaurant operations, with hands on training, Gavin also learned interviewing and workplace communication skills. For Gavin, this turned out to be time well spent because he was immediately hired by the Holiday Inn Vanderbilt working in the dish room. It did not take long until he was learning food preparation and cooking on the grill in a team-oriented work environment in the hotel’s very respected kitchen. Since that time, Gavin has been promoted to his dream job,” the front desk. He is now the person many people visiting Nashville will see and meet for their first time in our city and that includes helping to make their stay here a wonderful one. LaQuante LaQuante Thomas, graduated from Goodwill’s Construction Training program in May of 2018. Before he accomplished this workforce training goal, he had been bouncing between jobs working for different staffing agencies. While visiting an American Job Center, he discovered the information about Nashville Career Readiness Partnership Construction Training at Goodwill. Q” as he is known to his friends, says that Tim’s class saved me.” Now because of a stable job, a valuable skill set and knowledge about construction work and life skills he gained as part of the training, Q can take care of his needs and provide for his family of four while he and his fiancé are saving for their next big adventure, home ownership. Thomas Thomas Abernathy recently completed Certified Nursing Assistant training through the Nashville Career Readiness Partnership. Thomas attended classes at the Nurse Assistant Training School where he completed the course work in preparation to receive his CNA License. Thomas is now working for an area hospital and sees this as a path to reach his goal as a registered nurse. "If you are new to the healthcare field then this class is for you," Thomas said. Thomas would like for people interested in healthcare training to know how easy it is to enroll in the program. "I was in class sooner than I could imagine and the training has really prepared me for my hospital job."
